Lawn Problem

I have a resident in Hatley who sent me these photos. Thoughts? Disease or mammal? My first impression was possible skunk damage. Thanks!

  1. Hi Janell,

Given the time of the year and the size of the mounds, I suspect earthworm activity (checking after dark with a flashlight would help confirm). Some of the European earthworm species can be very active and noticeable in spring. I’ve seen a lot of earthworms lately on the sidewalk here in Dane County on rainy evenings—even when evening temps have been in the high 30’s or low 40’s. Once lawns green up and start growing, their activity is much less noticeable.

Skunk, raccoon, etc. damage will often be quite noticeable, because they can really tear up an area if looking for grubs.
